University of Illinois springfield Fuels Illinois Economy with nearly $1 Billion Annual Impact, New Study Reveals
SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) delivers a substantial $943.2 million boost to the Illinois economy each year, according to a newly released economic impact study conducted by Lightcast, a leading labor market analytics firm. The report, released today, underscores UIS’s significant role as an engine for economic growth and chance throughout the state, particularly in central Illinois.
The complete analysis reveals that UIS supports a total of 9,093 jobs statewide, factoring in university operations, student and visitor spending, volunteer contributions, and the enhanced earning power of its alumni. The most significant contribution – $847.9 million – stems directly from the increased earnings and economic activity generated by UIS graduates in Illinois businesses.
“UIS plays an essential role in preparing students for high-demand careers while strengthening the region’s workforce and economy,” said UIS Chancellor Janet L. Gooch. “This report shows the tangible value our university brings to taxpayers and communities across Illinois, demonstrating that an investment in UIS pays dividends for everyone.”
Beyond its educational mission, UIS’s direct spending, including payroll, contributed $80.4 million to the state economy in fiscal year 2023, sustaining 1,119 jobs. Student spending added a further $11.6 million, and visitors attending campus events generated $797,000 in income for the state.
The study also highlights a strong return on investment for both students and taxpayers:
* Students see a $5.70 return for every $1 invested in their UIS education, through increased lifetime earnings.
* For every $1 of public funding allocated to UIS,taxpayers benefit from $3.50 in added tax revenue and public sector savings.
* Society as a whole realizes $9.90 in benefits for every $1 invested in the university.
UIS graduates experience a significant increase in earning potential, averaging $33,900 more annually than Illinois workers with only a high school diploma – translating to $1.3 million in additional lifetime earnings per graduate.
“These findings affirm UIS’ role as a vital partner in driving workforce development and economic opportunity,” Gooch added. “Our graduates remain in Illinois, contribute to local communities and help meet the state’s evolving workforce needs. UIS is proud to be part of that growth and impact.”
