Universal Studios UK: Government Backs Theme Park with Funding

February 23, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

Bedford Borough Council is set to receive £80 million in funding as it prepares to host the UK’s first Universal Studios theme park, according to announcements made this week.

The financial boost, confirmed by the BBC, is intended to support infrastructure improvements ahead of the planned development. While the exact allocation of funds has not been detailed, the investment signals strong governmental support for the project, which is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the region.

Universal Parks & Resorts is currently seeking planning permission to build the theme park near Bedford, as reported by the BBC. The proposed site has been the subject of discussion for some time, with the council previously voicing concerns regarding the project’s impact on local infrastructure and the environment. Despite these reservations, Bedford Borough Council has indicated its intention to back the Universal UK plans, Blooloop reported.

Alongside the £80 million allocated to the local authority, a further £500 million is earmarked for transport upgrades to facilitate access to the theme park, according to TravelMole. These upgrades are intended to address potential congestion and ensure smooth transportation for visitors, and staff. The specifics of the transport improvements have not yet been released.

The project represents a substantial investment in the UK leisure sector and is anticipated to create thousands of jobs. Although, details regarding the park’s size, attractions, and opening date remain undisclosed as Universal awaits the outcome of the planning permission process.
