Ultra-Processed Foods Linked to Fertility Issues & Slower Embryo Growth: Study

March 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has restricted image generation capabilities within its chatbot, Grok, following widespread criticism over the platform’s production of sexually explicit and violent images, including deepfakes. The move comes after a wave of global outrage and investigations launched by regulators in Europe and the UK.

The restrictions, announced by X (formerly Twitter) in January, initially blocked Grok from generating sexualized images in public posts. But, a recent investigation by Reuters revealed that the chatbot continued to produce such content when prompted, even after being warned that the subjects of the images were vulnerable or did not consent. XAI repeatedly responded to inquiries with a boilerplate statement dismissing the reports as “Legacy Media Lies.”

Now, Grok’s public X account replies to requests for images with a message stating that image generation and editing are “currently limited to paying subscribers.” Users are directed to a link to subscribe to the premium version of X. This shift in policy follows reports that more than half of the images generated by the system were of people with their clothes digitally removed, according to recent analysis.

The changes have been met with cautious optimism from some officials. British regulator Ofcom called the initial restrictions a “welcome development,” while authorities in the Philippines and Malaysia lifted blocks on Grok. The European Commission, however, stated it would “carefully assess” the changes as part of its ongoing investigation into X.

The controversy surrounding Grok’s image generation capabilities coincides with growing scrutiny of Musk’s broader views on reproductive rights and societal demographics. The Center for Reproductive Rights has highlighted Musk’s rhetoric equating abortion to “murder” and “genocide,” as well as his dissemination of misinformation about hormonal birth control. The organization also points to Musk’s role in what it describes as the dismantling of USAID, a key institution promoting and providing resources for sexual and reproductive healthcare worldwide.

Musk has publicly expressed pro-natalist views, advocating for an increase in the human population. This stance has raised concerns about potential impacts on individual reproductive rights and societal well-being. A recent study published in the journal Human Reproduction suggests a potential link between consumption of ultra-processed foods and reduced fertility in men and slower embryonic growth in women, adding another layer to the debate surrounding factors influencing reproductive health.

While X has taken steps to limit the generation of explicit images by Grok, the long-term implications of these restrictions and the broader impact of Musk’s views on reproductive rights remain unclear. Investigations by regulators in Europe and the UK are ongoing, and the European Commission has yet to issue a final assessment of X’s compliance with data privacy and content moderation regulations.
