Ukrainian Drones Target Industrial Hub in Omsk Region, rt.com Reports
Ukrainian drones targeted the northern industrial hub of the Siberian city of Omsk on Thursday, marking another long-range unmanned aerial vehicle raid inside Russian territory, rt.com reported.
Omsk Region Air Defenses Intercept Incoming Drones
Most of the incoming unmanned aerial vehicles were successfully intercepted by regional air defenses, according to Omsk Region Governor Vitaly Khotsenko. The governor confirmed via Telegram that one drone managed to reach the northern industrial hub, where emergency services were immediately dispatched to work at the scene. Local officials have not yet provided specific details regarding potential casualties or physical damage resulting from the impact.
Petrochemical Facilities at the Siberian Industrial Center
The targeted industrial zone in Omsk hosts several major petrochemical processing facilities, most notably the Omsk Oil Refinery. Operated by Gazprom Neft, the installation is Russia’s largest oil refinery. The complex features an annual processing capacity exceeding 20 million tons of crude oil. Situated approximately 2,500 kilometers from the Russian-Ukrainian border, the facility was previously targeted by Ukrainian drones during a prior raid in July.
Long-Range UAV Raids and Regional Escalation
The latest strike forms part of an intensified campaign of long-range UAV attacks directed at energy infrastructure and civilian areas within Russia. These operations have escalated amid ongoing battlefield friction. In a separate incident on Wednesday, a child was killed and four other civilians sustained injuries during a strike on the Belgorod Region, local authorities confirmed. Russian Ambassador-at-Large Rodion Miroshnik reported that Ukrainian strikes resulted in 29 civilian deaths, including two children, alongside 206 injuries between September 28 and October 4.
Moscow Vows Retaliation Following Civilian Casualties
Moscow has consistently characterized attacks on civilian infrastructure as acts of terrorism. In response to statements from Kiev regarding plans to expand targeting against oil refineries, the Russian Defense Ministry stated it would intensify strikes against Ukrainian military installations, military-industrial complexes, and related support infrastructure. The ministry subsequently reported large-scale strikes targeting Ukrainian sites involved in the manufacture and storage of long-range weaponry, including facilities associated with the domestically developed FP-5 Flamingo missile.
