Ukrainian drone strikes hit Russian oil refineries, reports say
Ukrainian drone strikes have taken 10 percent of Russian oil refining capacity offline within a three-day window, Lrytas reported.
Drone Raid Hits Yaroslavl Oil Refinery
On the night of November 3, a mass drone raid struck the Yaroslavl oil refinery, known as “Slavneft-YANOS,” situated on Moscow Avenue, according to reporting by UNIAN. Regional residents reported hearing powerful explosions before official air defense alerts were broadcast. OSINT analysis by the channel ASTRA verified at least three distinct fire centers burning within the plant perimeter. Operating since 1961, the facility processes roughly 15 million tons of crude annually, supplying vital fuels to the Central and Northwestern federal districts, the Moscow region, local airports, and the Russian defense industry.
Ukrainian forces struck the “Lukoil-Nižegorodnefteorgsintez” (NORSI) refinery in the Kstovo district of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. Ranked as Russia’s fourth-largest refinery by capacity and second-largest in gasoline production, the complex sustained heavy damage to its AVT-5 and AVT-6 primary distillation units. Governor Gleb Nikitkin confirmed severe impacts on the industrial installation, warning residents of impending electrical outages and restrictions on hot water and heating supplies while emergency crews worked to contain the fallout.
Strikes Target Samara Airport and Novokuibyševsk Refinery
Operations expanded across multiple administrative zones as air defense networks intercepted waves of incoming unmanned systems. TV3.lt reported that the Samara airport was temporarily shut down following nighttime strikes. OSINT analysis confirmed a separate attack hit the Novokuibyševsk oil refinery, a Rosneft subsidiary possessing an annual processing capacity of 8.8 million tons. The facility produces more than 20 distinct petroleum products, including aviation kerosene for Russian aviation.

Concurrently, municipal authorities in the capital region reported heavy defensive activity. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobianin stated that air defense units intercepted multiple inbound drones heading toward the capital over several hours, specifically reporting on intercepted unmanned aerial vehicles between 00.45 and 6.20 val. Officials stated that a total of 87 drones heading toward the capital were shot down. Similar defensive engagements were logged by the governors of Kaluga and Tula oblasts, with Kaluga’s governor stating that 94 drones were downed over the evening and night, and Tula Governor Dmitry Miliayev reporting 21 drones, following a late-October wave of attacks that had previously forced the diversion or cancellation of more than 460 flights across Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo, and Pulkovo airports.
Ten Percent Refining Capacity Loss Trigger Emergency Regional Restructuring
The coordinated multi-day offensive crippled roughly one-tenth of the Russian Federation’s total petroleum refining throughput, according to assessments published by 15min.lt. The NORSI refinery alone has faced five separate emergency shutdowns throughout 2026 following preceding strikes in April, May, June, July, and August, severely disrupting national distribution networks for automotive gasoline, diesel fuel, heavy fuel oil (mazut), and road bitumen.
