Ukrainian Drone Strikes Hit Ozon Warehouse and Russian Oil Refinery
Ukrainian forces struck an Ozon logistics center in Samara Oblast, Russia, on August 22, triggering a fire that forced the evacuation of over 500 employees, according to the company. The attack marked the first time Ukraine attacked Ozon’s warehouses, and followed repeated Ukrainian strikes on logistics hubs linked to Wildberries, Russia’s largest online marketplace.

Simultaneous Strike on Oil Refinery Sparks Concerns
Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces set fire to the Novokuibyshevskyi oil refinery in Samara Oblast, a facility capable of producing 8.8 million metric tons of oil per year, Ukraine’s General Staff reported. The attack occurred that same night as the Ozon strike. Local residents shared images on social media that seemed to depict dense black smoke emerging from the site following the strike, with damage evaluation ongoing.
Crimea Airbase Attack Demonstrates Kyiv’s Reach
Ukrainian forces targeted and destroyed one Su-24M aircraft and four pieces of airfield equipment at the Saky airbase, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky’s report on Telegram. Ukraine also destroyed relay stations in Bryansk Oblast, western Russia, which are used to control drones. These strikes underscored Ukraine’s reach, with targets located roughly 900 kilometers (560 miles) from the front lines.

Ozon’s Response Highlights Escalating Tensions
Ozon’s statement described the drone attack as the first time Ukraine attacked its warehouses, while noting that Ukrainian officials said the company sells goods to the Russian military.
Strikes Align With Broader Strategy to Weaken Russia
The attacks coincided with Russia’s deepening fuel shortages, which have been exacerbated by previous Ukrainian strikes on oil infrastructure. On August 21, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces had attacked Russia’s Perm oil refinery. The facility is located roughly 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Ukraine.
Uncertain Russian Response as War Dynamics Shift
The strikes highlight the evolving dynamics of the war, with Kyiv increasingly leveraging long-range operations to challenge Moscow’s military and economic capabilities.
