Ukraine War: Russia Attacks & Moldova Power Outage | Latest Updates

March 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

A large-scale Russian drone attack on Ukraine overnight severed a key electricity connection between Ukraine and Moldova, leaving the Moldovan nation facing an energy crisis and prompting the government to declare a 60-day state of emergency in the energy sector.

The disruption occurred after Russian strikes targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing damage to transmission lines that supply electricity to Moldova. According to reports from TA3 and SITA.sk, the severed connection was a crucial link to the European power grid, primarily through Romania.

Moldovan President Maia Sanduova directly attributed the power outage to Russia, stating that the attacks were a deliberate attempt to destabilize Moldova. “Russia is trying to plunge Moldova into darkness,” Sanduova said, according to TA3. The claim echoes concerns raised by the White House last week, which warned that Russia was attempting to destabilize Moldova’s pro-Western government and potentially install a new, more Kremlin-friendly leadership.

The incident comes as Moldova grapples with existing energy vulnerabilities. The country was already heavily reliant on energy imports, and the loss of the Ukrainian connection significantly exacerbates the situation. Epoch Times Slovensko reported that the Moldovan government approved the state of emergency to address the immediate crisis and secure alternative energy sources.

The situation is particularly concerning for the breakaway region of Transnistria, a pro-Russian separatist territory within Moldova. According to Seznam Zpravy, Transnistria relies heavily on inexpensive electricity from Moldova, and the disruption could lead to further economic hardship and instability in the region. The report from January 2, 2025, notes that the region’s main power plant has switched from gas to coal, but has limited reserves.

Moldova’s limited military capacity further complicates the situation. CNN Iprima reported in March 2023 that the Moldovan army is one of the weakest in the region, lacking tanks and fighter jets. Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii acknowledged the army’s poor state, stating that 90 percent of its equipment is outdated.

The Kremlin, as revealed in a leaked document obtained by an international consortium of media outlets and reported by CT24, has a plan to gain control over Moldova by 2030 through hybrid warfare tactics, rather than direct military invasion. This includes political destabilization and the spread of disinformation.

Recent political developments in Moldova, including a close vote to enshrine a “European path” into the constitution, demonstrate the internal divisions within the country. The outcome of the vote, as reported by Seznam Zpravy on October 23, 2024, was surprisingly close, highlighting the ongoing influence of Russian propaganda and the challenges facing the pro-Western government.

As of Wednesday, March 25, 2026, the Moldovan government has not announced specific measures to address the energy shortfall beyond the declaration of the state of emergency. The situation remains fluid, with no immediate resolution in sight and continued concerns about potential further escalation.
