Ukraine Minister Slams FIA Decision to Lift Russian Motorsport Ban

September 2, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The decision by the FIA’s world motorsport council to lift the ban on Russian and Belarusian competitors on August 3 of this year drew immediate condemnation from Kyiv, with Matvii Bidnyi asserting that the move undermines international pressure against the aggressor state. Imposed in February 2022 following Vladimir Putin’s orders to invade Ukraine, the original motorsport restrictions aligned with wider global sporting sanctions. However, the recent policy shift by the FIA mirrors actions taken by the International Olympic Association.

The Diplomatic and Competitive Fallout Across Global Federations

While organizations like World Athletics and the International Biathlon Union have held firm against reintegration, Bidnyi noted that federations governing sports such as judo and weightlifting have similarly softened their stances to relieve pressure on Moscow. Meanwhile, the Russian Athletics Federation has challenged World Athletics sanctions directly through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Bidnyi emphasized that within Russia, elite athletics function primarily as an extension of military structures and state propaganda, characterizing the push for reintegration as active sportswashing.

Regulatory Adjustments and the FIA Framework

Responding to inquiries regarding the August 3 council vote, the FIA defended its updated protocols through an official statement issued last week. The governing body confirmed that revised requirements now apply to Russian and Belarusian drivers, national teams, competitors, and officials following the IOC’s July 7 guidance. Despite easing restrictions on individual competitors under neutral or updated criteria, the FIA clarified that bans on hosting official events and competitions within Russia and Belarus remain firmly active. The organization stated it continues to monitor geopolitical developments closely while reserving the right to alter its regulatory posture.
