Ukraine Launches One of Largest Drone Attacks on Russia as Moscow Strikes Kyiv
On August 16, 2026, Ukraine launched one of its largest aerial drone attacks against Russian territory, triggering extensive air defense operations across multiple regions. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence and regional officials, defensive forces intercepted and destroyed 822 unmanned aerial vehicles over European Russia, occupied Ukrainian territories, and the Black and Azov seas, resulting in structural fires, civilian casualties, and logistical disruptions near Moscow.
Massive Drone Volleys Target European Russia and Moscow Infrastructure
The overnight air assault impacted southern and central Russian regions. According to reports from the Russian Ministry of Defence, air defense systems neutralized 822 bezpilotních prostředků (unmanned aerial vehicles) across a wide geographic expanse. The ministry did not disclose the total number of launched drones or provide explicit data regarding specific direct impacts.
Local authorities on the ground detailed localized damage and casualties. In the southern Rostov region, Governor Yury Slyusar reported that five people died during the barrage, with the heaviest devastation concentrated in the city of Kamensk-Shakhtinsky. Slyusar confirmed that roughly 150 drones were destroyed over Rostov airspace alone.
Meanwhile, the capital region faced a wave of incoming machines. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated via Telegram that approximately 600 drones targeted Moscow from Saturday evening through Sunday morning, with 201 intercepted over the metropolis and its surrounding beltway. In the Moscow region, Governor Andrey Vorobyov reported that an 83-year-old man was killed and three others were injured when a drone struck a residential area.
The aerial impacts also targeted commercial logistics hubs. A fire broke out at an e-commerce warehouse belonging to Wildberries in Podolsk, with firefighters simultaneously battling another blaze at a similar fulfillment center in Domodedovo. These facilities have experienced repeated strikes in recent weeks.
Simultaneous Missile and Bomb Strikes Hit Ukrainian Population Centers
While Russian airspace absorbed the mass drone incursions, Russian forces executed bombardments against Ukrainian urban centers. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, Russian forces executed early-morning ballistic missile strikes against the Ukrainian capital, igniting fires in non-residential northern districts and south of the city center. Witnesses reported multiple explosions echoing across Kyiv.

The wider Ukrainian territory faced diversified aerial assaults. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces deployed gliding bombs and drones, as well as missiles, against multiple regions, including Kremenchuk and Kryvyj Rih. In Kryvyj Rih, local military administration head Oleksandr Vilkul confirmed that one person was killed and six others were wounded in the strikes.
German news agency DPA noted that Russia has intensified aerial campaigns against Kyiv and secondary cities amid acute ammunition shortages for Ukraine’s air defense network. While American-built Patriot systems are considered the most effective defense against high-velocity ballistic threats, Ukrainian forces face shortages of interceptor missiles required for their effective deployment.
