Ukraine Deploys Combat Ground Drones Armed With Dual Kalashnikov Rifles
Developed by a member company of the defense tech incubator Brave1, the low-cost roving turret aims to scale front-line robotization and protect infantry from lethal aerial hazards.
Engineering the Front-Line Roving Turret
The combat-tested uncrewed ground vehicle utilizes a four-wheeled platform carrying a specialized frame. Two Kalashnikov assault rifles sit closely together on this frame, anchored to a pan-and-tilt gimbal system. According to Brave1, the manufacturer developed the hardware to meet a specific technical brief issued less than six months prior to its operational debut. Each weapon features modifications behind the grip and trigger guard to accept remote fire commands. However, footage released by Brave1 shows that the system still requires a human operator nearby to manually reload box magazines and rack the bolts during prolonged engagements.
Ukraine chose the Kalashnikov platform for a pragmatic reason. As Brave1 stated in a public social media post, the weapon remains the most widely available small arm across Ukrainian military units. By designing the robotic turret around existing infantry weapons, the manufacturer enabled forces to rapidly scale the technology directly on the front lines.
Operational Deployment and Combat Testing
More than five Ukrainian military units are actively testing the dual-rifle ground drones in operational environments. The Security Service of Ukraine’s Alpha Group recently used the system in combat to destroy a Russian ambush drone. Front-line sectors across Ukraine have grown heavily saturated with aerial drones, making surface transit exceptionally hazardous for infantry soldiers. Deploying cheap ground systems helps mitigate these risks.
The Economics of Scalable Defense Technology
Ukraine has spent years expanding its uncrewed ground vehicle program to cover a wide array of duties. These include ground assaults, artillery spotting, casualty evacuations, mine-clearing, and frontline logistics. While ground drones do not completely solve the ongoing shortage of soldiers, they offer a vital buffer in dangerous zones.
The new Kalashnikov turret highlights a broader shift toward cheaper, simpler systems that can be manufactured rapidly. As Brave1 noted, scaling inexpensive combat uncrewed ground vehicles and robotizing the front line directly reduces casualties among infantry units. Keeping production costs low ensures that units can absorb combat losses without stalling deployment timelines.
The ability to mount standard infantry weapons onto scalable, remote-controlled chassis allows defenders to project force while keeping personnel out of direct fire zones.
