Ukraine Cities Hit: Residential Damage & Injuries Reported
A UNESCO World Heritage site in Ukraine was damaged Tuesday as Russia launched a massive drone attack across the country, killing at least eight people, Ukrainian officials reported.
The assault, involving nearly 400 drones, targeted cities in western Ukraine, including Lviv, and caused widespread damage to infrastructure and residential buildings. According to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, eight people were killed and several others injured in the attacks.
The National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) confirmed the widespread attacks, stating that the country’s air defense systems were actively engaged in intercepting the drones. The NSDC characterized the scale of the attack as significant, indicating a potential escalation in hostilities.
Among the sites hit was a UNESCO World Heritage site, the specific location of which has not yet been publicly disclosed. Damage to the site has been confirmed by Ukrainian authorities, prompting condemnation from international cultural organizations.
The attacks on western Ukraine represent a shift in focus for Russian forces, who have previously concentrated their efforts on the eastern and southern regions of the country. The increased intensity of drone strikes suggests the beginning of a spring offensive, according to some analysts.
Ukrainian officials have appealed to international partners for increased air defense assistance to counter the growing threat posed by Russian drones. The request comes as Ukraine continues to seek support in its defense against the ongoing Russian invasion.
As of Tuesday evening, Ukrainian authorities were continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties resulting from the drone attacks. The investigation into the damage to the UNESCO site is ongoing.
