UK Welcomes Potential US-Iran Talks: Ormuz Strait Must Reopen

March 23, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The United Kingdom welcomed reports of potential contacts between the United States and Iran on Monday, emphasizing that a “swift resolution” to ongoing tensions is in the interest of the international community. The statement from Downing Street came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced he had ordered a postponement of military action against Iran.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister stated that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains a priority for the UK, adding, “Any reports of productive talks are welcome. We have always said that a swift resolution to the conflict is in the global interest and that, in particular, the Strait of Hormuz needs to be reopened.”

The comments followed a joint statement issued by the UK alongside a group of countries calling for the safe passage of vessels through the vital waterway. Trump had previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the Strait of Hormuz to reopen, threatening military action if it remained closed. He has since extended that deadline by five days, citing the possibility of negotiations.

The UK’s response echoes previous calls for de-escalation in the region. In August 2025, reports surfaced – later debunked as false claims circulating on social media – that European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was excluded from a meeting between Trump and other European leaders to discuss the situation in Ukraine. While unrelated to the current Iran situation, the incident highlighted ongoing tensions in transatlantic relations and Trump’s approach to international diplomacy.

The situation remains fluid, with Iran yet to officially confirm any direct contact with the United States. The UK government has not offered further details on the nature of the potential talks or the parties involved, maintaining a position of cautious optimism as the five-day period outlined by President Trump progresses.
