UK Study Shows Small Sleep, Diet, Exercise Tweaks Add Years to Life

Small Changes,Big Impact: Even a Little More Sleep,Exercise & Veggies Can Add Years too Your Life

A new study leveraging data from the UK Biobank cohort – a large repository of health and lifestyle data from UK adults – suggests that even small improvements to daily habits can considerably impact longevity.

Researchers linked participants’ habits to their predicted lifespan and health using statistical modeling. They found that individuals who consistently achieved just a little more in key areas – five extra minutes of sleep, two extra minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, and half a serving of vegetables – lived significantly longer than those in the bottom 5% of the cohort regarding thes habits.

Specifically, the group making these small improvements had an extra year of predicted lifespan compared to the worst performers.

However, researchers caution that this doesn’t prove these habits directly cause increased lifespan. Stephen Burgess,a statistician at the University of Cambridge, explained that the study models potential outcomes if these changes improve health.

Interestingly, the study also found that improvements across multiple areas of well-being have a cumulative effect, exceeding the sum of their individual impacts. For example, gaining an extra year of life through sleep alone woudl require an additional 25 minutes of sleep per night. But combining small improvements in sleep, exercise, and diet can yield a substantial combined benefit.

Nicholas Koemel, the led study author and a dietitian at The University of Sydney, highlighted this synergistic effect.
