UK Postnatal Care Crisis: Women Left Unprotected and Overwhelmed

January 25, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Teh UK’s postnatal care system dangerously underfunds and understaffs, failing women, a new report warns.

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) reports that thousands of new mothers feel unsafe, unsupported, and overwhelmed in the weeks and months following childbirth.

Experts describe the report as “deeply troubling,” stating too many women “lack a safety net during a crucial and vulnerable time.” They emphasize that feeling overwhelmed should not be normalized in early parenthood.

An NCT survey of 2,000 new and expectant parents across the UK – including 500 pregnant women – reveals that 24% do not have regular access to NHS staff after birth.

A significant 87% of respondents reported feeling overwhelmed at least some of the time, with 22% feeling overwhelmed constantly. Furthermore, 62% experienced loneliness sometimes, and 12% felt lonely all the time.

Over half (59%) of pregnant women expressed worry about their mental health.

“Every major report demonstrates the UK’s maternity system fails to deliver safe, compassionate care,” says Angela McConville, NCT chief executive.

“Parenting is complex, encompassing joy, fear, overwhelm, and messiness. The care and support families receive profoundly shapes this emotional experience.”
