UK Navy Shadows Russian Warships in English Channel

February 2, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Royal Navy closely monitored Russian naval activity in the English Channel over two days, the UK Ministry of Defense (MoD) confirmed. This operation involved shadowing Russian vessels as thay passed near British waters on their way to the North Sea.

Patrol ships HMS Mersey and HMS Severn, both based in Portsmouth, were dispatched to track the Russian fleet. They were supported by a Wildcat helicopter from 815 Naval Air Squadron. The MoD stated the Royal Navy is prepared to safeguard UK waters and interests.

While the MoD didn’t specify the number of Russian vessels involved, they emphasized this is a routine response to foreign warships operating in the UK’s area of interest. The Royal Navy frequently intercepts and monitors vessels to ensure compliance with international laws and to deter any potential security threats.

“The Royal Navy maintains a continuous presence in the English Channel to protect UK waters and respond to any potential security challenges,” a MoD spokesperson said. “We are always ready to defend our interests and uphold maritime security.”

This recent activity comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions in Europe. The Royal Navy’s response demonstrates the UK’s commitment to maintaining a strong naval presence and protecting its maritime borders. Similar monitoring operations have occurred in the past, reflecting the ongoing need to observe and assess the activities of foreign naval forces in the region. Naval Technology provides further details on the deployment.

The Wildcat helicopter provided aerial surveillance and reconnaissance, enhancing the Royal Navy’s ability to track the Russian vessels’ movements. This combined effort of ships and aircraft allows for a comprehensive monitoring capability. The MoD has not released details regarding the Russian fleet’s final destination in the North Sea.
