A UK goverment minister has dismissed suggestions from former U.S. President Donald trump that the military should be deployed to address illegal migration. The response comes as the UK continues to implement a controversial scheme to deport migrants who arrive via small boats across the English Channel.
The government’s focus remains on establishing a “functioning system” capable of rapidly and efficiently processing arrivals, aiming to deter future crossings, according to a statement from the Home Office. This strategy involves ongoing deportation flights, with more planned into next week, and a legal appeal to restrict the time migrants have to challenge their removal. Despite over 5,500 migrants reaching the UK since the scheme’s implementation in early August, officials maintain the flights will serve as a deterrent.
Approximately 100 men who entered the UK by small boat are currently held in immigration removal centers near Heathrow Airport and are potentially subject to removal to France under the new policy. The minister’s rejection of Trump‘s proposal underscores the UK’s commitment to its own approach to border control, distinct from the policies advocated by the former U.S. president.
