UK Government Scrapped Wildfire Plans as Firefighters Lack Protective Gear

UK Government Scrapped Wildfire Plans as Firefighters Lack Protective Gear

October 4, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Government Quietly Abandoned England Wildfire Preparation Plan

The UK government quietly scrapped plans to prepare the English countryside for wildfires, despite official data showing that more than half of fire services lack proper protective equipment to tackle them, theguardian.com reported. The abandoned commitment leaves fire and rescue services facing escalating risks without the specialized resources and land management adaptations originally promised between 2023 and 2027.

The disclosure emerges as the UK reels from its hottest summer on record, which triggered a surge in wildfire incidents across England and Wales. National Resilience statistics submitted to the National Fire Chiefs Council showed that 1,312 wildfires had been recorded by August 31, 2026, representing an increase of more than 300 fires compared with 2025, according to reporting cited by thefpa.co.uk.

Conservative Government Failed to Implement Wildfire Risk Programme

The third national climate adaptation programme, published in July 2023 under the Conservative government headed by Rishi Sunak, explicitly stated that a wildfire risk programme would run in England from 2023 to 2027 to adapt land management for extreme weather hazards. However, theguardian.com revealed that the initiative was never implemented. The current government confirmed that the commitment was made by the previous government but was not brought into effect.

Environmental campaigner and author Guy Shrubsole, who uncovered the shelving of the program via a freedom of information request, described the inaction as appalling, telling theguardian.com that successive administrations had been asleep at the wheel. The revelation coincides with new data from the Country Land and Business Association showing that more than half of the 29 fire services responding to inquiries possessed no wildfire personal protective equipment.

Training levels remain critically low, with services like Cheshire reporting only 8.62% of employees trained for wildfire operations, and Cleveland reporting just 1.2% qualified to give tactical advice.

Escalating National Threat and Rising Toll

The summer of 2026 showed the severe human and structural cost of the mounting crisis. In August, a fast-moving fire swept through Stourbridge in the West Midlands, destroying 19 homes and leaving families temporarily displaced, as detailed by thefpa.co.uk and bbc.co.uk.

The scale of destruction extended far beyond the Midlands. Meanwhile, in Scotland, fires in the Cairngorms burned across roughly 25 square kilometres for a month, requiring 500 firefighters to contain.

Climate Change Committee chair Baroness Brown warned that the UK remains inadequately prepared, stating that lives could be lost without greater investment and preventative measures, bbc.co.uk reported. National Fire Chiefs Council chair Phil Garrigan noted that nearly one in five large wildfires in England and Wales in 2026 came within 500 metres of built-up areas, signaling that blazes are no longer isolated seasonal anomalies.

Government Invests 97m in National Resilience Assets

In response to the mounting pressure, the government announced a £97m investment in National Resilience assets to fund specialized firefighting teams and off-road vehicles. A government spokesperson stated that wildfire preparedness is now a priority, adding that the prime minister has said the government will hold a summit with fire and rescue services and other organisations to make sure they have the right equipment and resources.

Despite the new funding, fire sector leaders maintain that further systemic reforms are urgently required. Steve Wright, general secretary of the Fire Brigades Union, called for 5,000 additional firefighters and long-term prevention strategies, pointing out that total firefighter numbers fell by 14% across the decade leading to March 2025. Environmental advocates argue that preventing future disasters will require land management changes, including re-wetting peat bogs and establishing firebreaks before seasonal temperatures rise again.

The money has to be there, otherwise we’ll be going into 2027 and 2028 with a likely occurrence that we’ll see what we’ve seen in 2026, which is 50 plus homes lost and families devastated by the impacts of wildfire, Phil Garrigan told bbc.co.uk. We’ve got to get ahead of that.
