UK Government announces brain cancer research review after Goodburn plea

October 15, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Archie Goodburn, an elite Scottish swimmer and brain tumour campaigner, met with Prime Minister Andy Burnham at Downing Street to discuss improving survival and quality of life for patients diagnosed with brain cancer.

  • The UK government announced a rapid expert review of brain cancer research progress led by Professor Anthony Chalmers, scheduled to report its findings within three months.
  • Officials committed to accelerating the Orphan Drugs Review under the Rare Cancers Act from a three-year timeline down to two years.
  • The Department of Health and Social Care and Cancer Research UK will jointly host a global brain cancer conference in 2027 to attract international investment.

Meeting the Prime Minister After an Emotional Appeal

The Downing Street meeting followed Goodburn’s televised plea in August on BBC Breakfast, where he addressed the Prime Minister directly and called for immediate government action regarding brain tumour research funding and patient access. The Brain Tumour Charity noted that the resulting package of measures represents a generational shift in how brain tumours are perceived and addressed across the United Kingdom. According to government figures published for 2023, malignant brain cancer accounted for 278 deaths among individuals under the age of 40 in England alone (alongside 1,711 deaths from all malignant cancers excluding non-melanoma skin cancer in that age group), 3,514 deaths in patients over 40 (alongside 136,867 all-cancer deaths in that group), and 3,792 total deaths across all ages out of 138,578 total malignant cancer deaths.

Panel Will Identify Barriers to Clinical Progress

This panel will assess what has changed for patients since a previous 2018 government review and identify ongoing barriers to clinical progress. The review is mandated to report back within three months, after which a national action plan will be formulated to speed up the translation of laboratory discoveries into active clinical trials. Health and Social Care Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the administration owes it to every affected family to improve trial availability and accelerate patient access. Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive of Cancer Research UK, said: We’re so grateful to Archie Goodburn for the work he does on behalf of people living with brain tumours, and his meeting with the Prime Minister today is a critical moment for people affected by this type of cancer.

UK Accelerates Orphan Drug Reviews and Plans Conference

Additional policy adjustments include accelerating the Orphan Drugs Review timeline under the Rare Cancers Act from three years down to two years, with formal updates scheduled at six and twelve months. The Department of Health and Social Care will partner with Cancer Research UK to host a global conference in 2027 aimed at establishing the UK as a premier destination for oncology study. Prime Minister Andy Burnham acknowledged during the discussions that current medical progress has been insufficient for families facing aggressive malignancies, emphasizing that patients cannot afford prolonged delays in therapeutic development.
