Dover,England – Migrants continue to attempt the perilous crossing of the English Channel, with many entrusting their fate – and important sums of money – to human smugglers. A mother and son, recently arrived in Europe, exemplify the risks and costs associated with seeking asylum in the United Kingdom.
Asmeret, accompanied by her eight-year-old son, has found temporary safety in Europe after paying approximately €8000 – equivalent to $14,400 – to smugglers for passage to England. This considerable payment represents a lifetime of savings, invested in the hope of securing a future free from persecution. Despite living in temporary tent accommodations, Asmeret expressed a sense of relief at being in Europe.
