Dover,England – Migrants continue to attempt the perilous⁤ crossing of the English Channel,with ⁢many⁣ entrusting their fate – and important⁣ sums⁢ of‌ money – ‍to human smugglers. A mother​ and ‍son, recently arrived in ⁢Europe, exemplify the risks and costs associated⁢ with‌ seeking asylum in‌ the United Kingdom.

Asmeret, accompanied by her ​eight-year-old son, has‌ found⁣ temporary safety in Europe after paying approximately €8000 – equivalent to $14,400 – to smugglers for ‌passage to England. ​ This considerable payment represents a lifetime ⁤of savings, invested in the hope of securing a future free from persecution. Despite living in temporary tent accommodations,⁢ Asmeret expressed a sense of relief​ at being in Europe.
