Media Organizations in Britain and Ireland Targeted by Hoax Bomb Threats
Prominent media organizations across Britain and Ireland received security threats via email warning of bombs on Friday, November 6, according to reports by the Jordanian News Agency, Petra, and Akhbar Hayat. The email threats warned of bombs at the targeted organizations.
Targets Affected Across Dublin and London
The electronic threats targeted several prominent broadcasters and publishers on the same day. Affected entities included British broadcaster Sky, Ireland’s public radio and television broadcaster RTÉ, the Irish Independent newspaper, and the radio station Youstock FM. Sky confirmed receiving a security threat just hours after RTÉ evacuated its building. British broadcaster BBC reported that Irish authorities described the threats as false, while armed police deployed to the RTÉ headquarters in the Irish capital of Dublin to search it before staff were allowed to return and resume normal work.
Armed Police Response and Evacuation at RTÉ
Armed police deployed to the RTÉ headquarters in the Irish capital of Dublin following the electronic alert. Security teams searched the facility thoroughly before giving the all-clear. Staff members subsequently returned to the building and resumed normal operations.
Authorities Investigate Malicious Emails Sent to Sky
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin stated that authorities are actively working to identify those responsible for the malicious emails. Law enforcement is coordinating efforts across security and defense agencies, alongside cybersecurity experts and European counterparts. According to the Prime Minister, incidents of this nature are deliberately designed to provoke fear and disrupt the normal flow of society.
Sky confirmed it conducted a security assessment and immediately notified the relevant authorities. The network continues to coordinate with them to ensure the safety of its staff and the continuity of its operations.
