UIC Women's Soccer Falls 2-0 to Drake in MVC Match

UIC Women’s Soccer Falls 2-0 to Drake in MVC Match

October 5, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The UIC women’s soccer team fell to the Drake Bulldogs 2-0 at Mediacom Stadium in Des Moines on October 4, 2026. Two first-half goals from MVC scoring leader Angela Gutierrez secured the win for the Bulldogs, dropping the Flames to a 1-8-2 overall record and 0-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play.

First-Half Deficit Decides the Match

The match turned in the opening 25 minutes as the Bulldogs established a multi-goal lead. According to UIC Athletics, Angela Gutierrez scored in the 20th and 24th minutes to put the home side ahead. Alma Beaton and Isabella Balsley provided the assists on those goals, respectively. While UIC attempted to respond, a penalty kick by Rosie Martin hit the post in the 32nd minute, maintaining the 2-0 deficit heading into halftime. The Flames’ defensive effort included a save by Sidney Lazenby in the 17th minute following a Drake free kick.

The Flames had attempted to seize early momentum, with Becca Ruggiero recording the contest’s first shot in the 14th minute, which was turned away by a Bulldogs save. Later, Gracie Lisota attempted to spark a comeback before the break, sending the team’s final shot of the half toward the net in the 38th minute, only to have it blocked by the Drake defense.

UIC Offensive Pressure Fails to Change Final Score

UIC increased their offensive pressure in the second half, recording several opportunities to narrow the gap. Camryn Ries recorded the team’s first shot of the half in the 49th minute, forcing a save from the Bulldogs’ second-half goalkeeper. UIC appeared to find the back of the net in the 82nd minute, but the goal was overturned following an offside ruling. The Flames were unable to generate another shot on goal for the remainder of the contest, confirming the 2-0 final score.

Drake Remains Undefeated in Conference Play

Drake enters the mid-season stretch with an 8-3-1 overall record and remains undefeated in conference play at 3-0. Conversely, UIC continues to struggle this season, currently holding a winless record within the Missouri Valley Conference.
