Uganda Airlines Unveils Ambitious Expansion Plan Backed by Gen. Muhoozi
Uganda Airlines unveiled an ambitious strategic expansion plan aimed at scaling up its international network, introducing domestic flights, and bringing technical operations in-house. Acting Chief Executive Officer Girma Wake presented the blueprint to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba at the Special Forces Command Headquarters in Entebbe, securing backing for the carrier’s commercial growth.
Strategic Leadership Alignment at Entebbe
The high-level briefing brought together key members of the national carrier’s executive team to address long-term operational sustainability. Acting CEO Girma Wake met with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba alongside Chief Finance Officer Allan Joel Kyeyune, Acting Manager for Human Resource and Administration Anne Apio, and Acting Chief Commercial Officer Shakila Lamar Rahim.
This leadership summit arrives during a broader institutional transition. Uganda Airlines is actively implementing structural changes designed to tighten corporate governance, stabilize daily operations, and build a resilient foundation for long-term commercial viability.
Network Growth and Fleet Optimization
The newly detailed growth strategy focuses heavily on maximizing the performance of the carrier’s existing fleet. Management plans to extract maximum efficiency from current assets while establishing new routes.
According to the executive briefings, the expanded network will target key commercial destinations across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Simultaneously, the airline intends to reinforce connections with major regional hubs throughout Africa. Domestically, the carrier is rolling out new routes designed to capture demand for local air travel and improve connectivity between the country’s major destinations.
Transport logistics of this scale often require careful corporate restructuring.
Insourcing Maintenance to Cut Operational Costs
A core pillar of the expansion strategy involves slashing overhead by cutting reliance on third-party service providers. Uganda Airlines management confirmed plans to transition critical technical functions, including aircraft maintenance and ground-handling services, in-house.

This transition is not merely financial; it is educational. The airline is investing in the training and professional development of local aviation personnel. By building domestic technical capacity, the carrier aims to equip Ugandan professionals with specialized skills, ensuring technical independence for the national fleet.
Managing the human resources and employment law complexities of an expanding technical workforce requires dedicated infrastructure.
Economic Stakes and Regional Integration
Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba praised the airline’s executive team for the progress achieved thus far, pledging support for the carrier’s trajectory. During the discussions, the Chief of Defence Forces emphasized that a thriving, competitive national airline is indispensable to Uganda’s broader economic architecture.

Trade, tourism, regional integration, and international connectivity all depend on a reliable flag carrier capable of projecting national presence abroad. However, executive leadership noted that these ambitions remain tethered to continuous collaboration with state entities and industry stakeholders.
As Uganda Airlines moves from planning to execution, its ability to master structural efficiency will dictate its place in the regional aviation market. The success of this blueprint will determine whether the carrier can cement itself as a cornerstone of East African commerce.
