UFL 2024: Battlehawks’ Ricky Proehl on Opener, New Rules & St. Louis Support
Ricky Proehl Aims to Build on Battlehawks Momentum in UFL’s Second Season
The St. Louis Battlehawks, coming off a successful inaugural season in the United Football League, begin their 2026 campaign Saturday against the defending champion DC Defenders. Newly appointed head coach Ricky Proehl emphasized the high level of talent within the league and his confidence in the team’s potential, despite being considered underdogs to win the championship.
Proehl, a St. Louis Rams legend and Super Bowl champion, was named head coach in December 2025, returning to the Battlehawks organization where he previously served as wide receivers coach in 2023. He replaced Anthony Becht, who accepted the head coaching position with the Orlando Storm. The UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon stated Proehl was “the perfect fit” for the role, citing his deep roots in St. Louis and his proven track record as both a player and a coach.
“These guys can play,” Proehl said in a recent appearance on “First Things First.” “The level is so high here. … Some of them haven’t had the opportunity to showcase their talent and skill set.” He noted the differences in training camp compared to his NFL experience, suggesting many players are simply seeking opportunities to demonstrate their abilities.
Despite the Battlehawks currently holding the fifth-best odds to win the UFL championship, Proehl expressed unwavering belief in his team. “Absolutely,” he responded when asked if he believed the team was underrated. “But that’s OK. That’s kind of a good place to be. I’m excited about our football team. … These guys are so much fun to coach.”
The 2026 season features several new offensive-focused rule changes designed to increase scoring, and excitement. Proehl, describing himself as “an offensive guy,” highlighted the fourth-and-12 rule as particularly impactful. He recalled a previous Battlehawks game where the team scored 16 points in a minute and a half utilizing the rule, which allows teams trailing in the fourth quarter to attempt a long-yardage conversion from their own 28-yard line instead of an onside kick.
Key players for the Battlehawks include quarterback Brandon Silvers, who has prior UFL and XFL experience, receiver Hakeem Butler, and defensive standouts Pita Taumoepenu, Travis Feeney, and Carlos Davis. Proehl emphasized the enthusiastic support of the St. Louis fanbase, calling the city “one of the best sports towns in our country.”
“We’re the staple of the league,” Proehl said. “It’s a great atmosphere. St. Louis is one of the best sports towns in our country. They support every sport in that city, and the Battlehawks are no different. … It’s exciting to be a part of.”
