UC Berkeley Student Death: Investigation Ongoing

February 16, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

A 22-year-vintage graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, was found dead near Lake Anza on Sunday, February 15, 2026, according to reports from indica News. The student’s identity has not been officially released by university officials.

The discovery comes amid increasing scrutiny of the challenges faced by international students in the United States, particularly those from India. Recent reports indicate that thousands of Indian students are facing unexpected revocations of their F-1 visas without clear explanations, a situation that has raised concerns about due process and the academic futures of those affected. While authorities have not indicated any connection between the student’s death and the visa issues, the timing adds to a climate of anxiety within the international student community.

The UC Berkeley Police Department is leading the investigation into the student’s death, but details remain scarce. University spokespersons have declined to comment beyond confirming the incident and stating that counseling services are available to students and faculty.

Separately, Indian American Utkarsh Jain, 21, is currently campaigning as a Republican candidate for a California state seat, according to indica News. Jain’s candidacy represents a growing presence of Indian Americans in California politics.

Another Indian American, Tej Gundavelli, is gaining recognition for his nonprofit organization, Touch-A-Life, which focuses on community development. Gundavelli’s work highlights the diverse contributions of Indian Americans to various sectors within the United States. These developments occur as the university investigates the death of its graduate student.

As of Monday afternoon, February 16, 2026, the UC Berkeley Police Department has not released any further information regarding the cause of death or the circumstances surrounding the discovery. The investigation is ongoing.
