Ubuntu Core 26 IoT Edition: 15 Years of Long-Term Support for Linux-Based Devices

May 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Canonical today released Ubuntu Core 26, its latest long-term supported (LTS) version of the company’s minimal, immutable operating system, offering up to 15 years of security maintenance for mission-critical deployments. The update introduces live kernel patching, 90% smaller over-the-air (OTA) updates, and precision-led builds through a tool called Chisel, all designed to reduce installation times and operational overhead for large-scale device fleets.

The release marks a significant evolution in Canonical’s approach to security and reliability for embedded and edge computing. Every component in Ubuntu Core 26 is sandboxed and cryptographically signed as a snap, ensuring only verified software executes during boot—a model the company first pioneered a decade ago. This measured boot chain aligns with emerging industry standards, including the European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA), which requires vendors to demonstrate robust software integrity and traceability.

Jon Seager, Vice President of Ubuntu Engineering at Canonical, emphasized the platform’s role in securing critical infrastructure. “Ubuntu Core 26 delivers the foundation that operators need to meet regulatory demands while running attested, immutable edge AI workloads,” he said. The release also targets AI-driven workflows, offering optimized stacks for model training and deployment, with support for hybrid cloud environments.

Beyond technical improvements, the update reflects broader industry trends toward composable infrastructure, where organizations assemble tailored software stacks from trusted, modular components. Canonical’s recent research, cited in an IDC report, found that 9 out of 10 enterprises prefer sourcing packages from their operating system vendor to simplify dependency management and reduce vulnerabilities. Ubuntu Core 26’s focus on precision builds and hardware-backed protection aligns with this demand, particularly for sectors like healthcare, industrial IoT, and financial services where uptime and compliance are non-negotiable.

The release comes as enterprises increasingly adopt immutable operating systems to mitigate supply chain risks and simplify long-term maintenance. Unlike traditional Linux distributions, Ubuntu Core’s immutable architecture prevents unauthorized modifications, reducing the attack surface for devices exposed to untrusted networks. Live kernel patching further minimizes downtime, a critical advantage for edge deployments where manual intervention is impractical.

Canonical did not disclose specific customer adoption metrics but noted that the platform is already deployed in sectors requiring decade-long support lifecycles. The company’s financial disclosures from 2023 indicate revenue of $250 million, with operations spanning over 70 countries, though it remains privately held. The release of Ubuntu Core 26 follows a broader push by Canonical to integrate AI and data solutions into its enterprise portfolio, including tools for MLOps and database management.

While the technical details of Ubuntu Core 26 address immediate operational needs, the release also signals Canonical’s strategy to position Ubuntu as the default choice for secure, scalable Linux deployments in regulated environments. The company’s emphasis on compliance with the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act underscores the growing intersection of software design and global regulatory frameworks—a trend likely to shape enterprise IT priorities in the coming years.
