Bordeaux Clinches Offensive Bonus in Thrilling 32-20 Victory over Lyon
Bordeaux, France – November 18, 2023 – Union Bordeaux Bègles (UBB) secured an unexpected offensive bonus point with a 32-20 victory over Lyon (lou) at Chaban-Delmas stadium this Saturday. Despite a strong start and a thirteen-point lead, the defending champions faced a scare fueled by a standout performance from Lyon’s young scrum-half, Esteban Gonzalez.
Bordeaux initially dominated, with Maxime Lamothe opening the scoring in the 4th minute (7-0). Matthieu Jalibert then set up a try for Deportere with a precise kick, followed by a 60-meter solo effort from Louis Bielle-Biarrey, extending the lead to 17-0 by the 17th minute.
Lyon responded through Gonzalez, who exploited a gap near a ruck to score in the 26th minute (17-10). Bordeaux conceded penalties, allowing Lyon to close the gap to 17-13 by halftime.
Gonzalez continued his impressive form after the break,capitalizing on a missed tackle to secure a double and put Lyon ahead 17-20 in the 55th minute. Bordeaux struggled against Lyon’s defense, highlighted by a strong tackle from Wainiqolo on Rayasi in the 59th minute.
A yellow card issued to Lyon’s Fijian winger for a deliberate foul in the 64th minute proved pivotal. jalibert equalized (20-20,65th),and the game opened up.Jalibert then assisted Rayasi for a try (27-20, 68th), before Bielle-Biarrey added his second try of the match, and sixth of the season, to seal the victory (32-20, FT).
The win allows Bordeaux to approach their upcoming match against Toulouse with confidence. Lyon will return home to face Perpignan, seeking to regain momentum in the Top 14.
