UAlbany Volleyball to Host Invitational, Faces Familiar Foes

ALBANY, NY – The UAlbany volleyball team opens its home schedule this weekend, hosting the UAlbany Invitational at the Recreation adn Convocation Center.The Great Danes will welcome Cornell, Canisius, and Syracuse for a three-day tournament beginning Friday, september 6th.

UAlbany enters the invitational following a triumphant 2023 season that saw them secure their first win over Syracuse since 2013 and a four-set victory against Cornell – both on their home court.These matchups highlight a challenging early-season schedule designed to test the team and build momentum as they navigate the 2024 campaign. The invitational provides an immediate chance to assess their performance against regional rivals and establish a strong foundation for the season.

The Great Danes and Syracuse will meet for the 13th all-time meeting, with the Orange leading the series 8-4. UAlbany’s 2023 sweep of Syracuse marked a meaningful statement to begin their season.

Cornell begins its 2025 season in Albany, opening against the Great Danes on Friday night. The Big Red return key players, including outside hitter Ella Hansen, who led the team in kills in 2024. UAlbany holds a 3-5 record in the all-time series against Cornell, having won their most recent matchup in 2023.

canisius (1-2) enters the tournament after competing at the YSU Invitational, where they defeated Mercyhurst after a loss to Duquesne. Senior outside hitter Bella Mosquera and setter ella Bourque are key players for the Golden Griffins. The series between UAlbany and Canisius is currently led by Canisius, 1-0, with their only prior meeting occurring in 1999.
