UAE Weather: Heavy Rain, Dust Storms & High Alert This Week
Heavy rainfall and strong winds are disrupting daily life across the United Arab Emirates, prompting safety advisories and temporary road closures as authorities brace for unstable weather conditions expected to persist through at least Thursday. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) issued the latest five-day weather bulletin warning of continued heavy rain, with wind speeds reaching up to 45kph, particularly in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the Northern Emirates.
The adverse weather is not limited to the UAE; neighboring Oman has already experienced deadly flooding after torrential rains caused flash floods over the weekend, resulting in two fatalities and the rescue of nine individuals, according to Oman’s Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority. Saudi Arabia has also cautioned the public to exercise vigilance during the Eid Al Fitr holiday due to anticipated heavy rain, fog, and dust storms.
In Dubai, rain caused minor flooding along Sheikh Zayed Road, while in Sharjah, Al Ezwah Street in Al Dhaid city was temporarily closed due to water accumulation but has since reopened, as announced by the General Command of Sharjah Police. Ajman Municipality reported that its field teams are operating around the clock to manage the situation and ensure service continuity. Gulf News is providing live updates on weather, traffic, and airport advisories.
The UAE’s National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (Ncema) is closely monitoring the developments following discussions with the Ministry of Interior and the NCM. Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution, adhere to speed limits, and avoid water ponds and fast-moving streams. The Ministry of Interior has issued a broader safety advisory, warning of reduced visibility due to dust and sandstorms, and advising residents to stay away from the sea during rough conditions. Dubai Standard reports that the NCM warned of convective cloud formation over scattered regions of the UAE, with fresh to strong winds expected to cause blowing dust and sand.
Residents are being encouraged to rely on verified sources for weather updates, as unstable conditions are expected to continue until at least Friday, March 27, with rainfall of “varying intensity.” Abu Dhabi Media Office has even called on photographers to document the weather, seeking images of the capital city amidst the clouds. The NCM forecasts that strong gusts of wind could lift sand and dust, further reducing visibility. The National News reports that authorities remain on high alert.
As of late Monday, authorities have not announced any widespread disruptions to air travel, but residents are advised to check with airlines for potential delays or cancellations. The situation remains fluid, and further updates are expected as the week progresses.
