U.S. Marines Join Norway’s Cold Response 2026 Arctic Exercise
Exercise Cold Response 26: NATO Allies Prepare for Arctic Training
The Norwegian Armed Forces will lead Exercise Cold Response 26 in northern Norway this March, with deployments of allied forces beginning as early as January. Approximately 3,000 U.S. Marines will participate, alongside units from other U.S. branches and NATO member countries, according to confirmations from U.S.and Norwegian officials.
This exercise is a routine,Norwegian-led winter drill. It’s designed to test the ability of forces to operate in challenging arctic conditions. cold Response focuses on strengthening the interoperability of participating nations and enhancing overall readiness for crisis response.
“These exercises are vital for maintaining our collective defense capabilities and ensuring we can operate effectively together in any environment,” stated a recent Department of Defense press release.
Previous iterations of Exercise Cold Response have involved a important number of participants and complex scenarios. Exercise Cold Response 2022,for example, included forces from 27 nations and demonstrated the alliance’s ability to reinforce Norway during a crisis.
The 2026 exercise will specifically emphasize cold-weather warfare skills, logistical support in arctic environments, and joint operations. Units will practice maneuvering in snow and ice, conducting live-fire exercises, and coordinating air and ground assets.
Norway’s strategic location and commitment to NATO make it a key training area for allied forces preparing for operations in the High North. The exercise isn’t directed against any specific nation, but it serves as a clear signal of NATO’s resolve and capability to defend its members and interests in the region.
Preparatory deployments in January will allow forces to acclimatize to the harsh conditions and establish logistical infrastructure before the main exercise begins in March. This phased approach ensures a safe and effective training environment for all participants.
Further details regarding the specific scenarios and participating units will be released closer to the start of Exercise Cold Response 26.
