Type 2 Diabetes Risk: Family History & Prevention Steps

March 22, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

India is experiencing a surge in type 2 diabetes cases, now estimated at 74 million, second only to China’s 121 million, according to recent data.

A significant risk factor for developing the disease is family history, with individuals having a two to three times higher risk if one parent is diabetic, and a five to six times higher risk if both parents are affected. This genetic predisposition is increasingly understood through the lens of epigenetic factors, specifically parental-specific transmission of risk alleles to offspring linked to DNA methylation and imprinting.

Recent research highlights the importance of early detection and preventative measures. A study comparing offspring of diabetic and non-diabetic parents revealed differences in lipid profiles, suggesting these profiles can serve as early indicators of atherogenesis and potential peripheral arterial disease development. The study, conducted on 100 offspring with a family history of diabetes and 80 without, found measurable differences in cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein levels.

Population-based family history analysis is proving crucial in identifying susceptible populations within India, particularly among different castes and sub-castes. A study focusing on Brahmins in a compact Indian town emphasized the need for stratification based on guidelines established by Scheuner and colleagues to improve overall health standards.

The rising prevalence of diabetes in India is prompting increased focus on preventative health screenings. Experts suggest that tracking key metabolic factors, particularly for individuals with a family history of the disease, is a vital step in delaying or preventing onset. The genetic component of the disease is being further investigated, with research exploring the role of lipid profiles as early warning signs.

While the exact mechanisms of inheritance are still being studied, the strong correlation between family history and type 2 diabetes underscores the importance of proactive health management for those with affected relatives. Further research is planned to refine risk assessment and intervention strategies.
