Two Years of Waiting for a Lying Deputy Minister: Opinion

by Emma Walker – News Editor

Nathalie van Berkel, nominated to be the State Secretary of Finance in the incoming cabinet led by Prime Minister Rob Jetten, has withdrawn her candidacy following revelations concerning inaccuracies in her curriculum vitae. The announcement, made Monday, throws the formation of the new government into disarray and forces Jetten to begin a search for a replacement within the week.

The withdrawal comes after reports surfaced questioning the veracity of details presented in Van Berkel’s CV, prompting scrutiny of her professional background. Whereas specific details of the inaccuracies have not been publicly disclosed, the controversy proved insurmountable for the D66 politician.

Rob Jetten is now tasked with identifying a new candidate for the position, a process he hopes to complete this week. He was scheduled to meet with potential candidates individually, according to reports. The setback represents a “smear on the blazon” for the incoming administration, according to BNR Nieuws.

The situation underscores the intense vetting process facing prospective members of the new cabinet. The appointment of Claudia van Bruggen as State Secretary of Justice and Security remains confirmed, but the vacancy in the Finance portfolio adds further pressure to the government formation process.

The withdrawal of Van Berkel leaves the composition of the cabinet-Jetten incomplete, with the search for a suitable replacement now underway. No immediate replacement has been named, and the timeline for filling the position remains uncertain.
