In a span of 48 hours, two military aircraft experienced runway excursions at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Maros Regency, South Sulawesi. According to local reporting from Kompas.id and Antara News, the incidents involved an Indonesian Air Force Sukhoi fighter jet on Monday, followed by a Cassa aircraft on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Airport authorities confirmed no casualties resulted from either event.
Back-to-Back Runways Excursions Shock South Sulawesi Aviation
The sequence of events began on Monday, August 24, 2026, when an air force Sukhoi jet veered off the western edge of the runway, specifically designated as runway 13, at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport. Just one day later, a second aircraft faced a similar hazard. According to Kompas.com, a Cassa aircraft suspected to belong to the TNI slid off the paved surface on the north-south runway, identified as runway 03-21, at approximately 11:25 WITA on Tuesday.
PGS Branch Communication and CSR Department Head Bandara Sultan Hasanuddin, Taufan Yudhistira, verified the Cassa incident after video footage circulated widely across social media platforms. “Information regarding the Cassa aircraft sliding off is indeed true and is currently being handled,” Taufan stated in Makassar, as reported by Antara. Airport personnel were immediately dispatched to secure the perimeter and initiate recovery operations.
While the physical proximity of the two incidents within the same airfield has occurred, officials noted that the aircraft utilized different landing strips. The Sukhoi jet encountered trouble on the western side runway, whereas the Cassa aircraft slid off the north-south corridor.
