Six total airport workers contracted malaria tropica, the most dangerous form of the disease, during the course of their work at Frankfurt Airport. Public health authorities, including the Robert Koch Institute, confirm the vector was likely an infected Anopheles mosquito imported by aircraft. City health authorities emphasize that the general population faces a negligible risk, as airport malaria is exceedingly rare and there is no likelihood of person-to-person spread.

Timeline of Fatalities and Occupational Cases

The first fatality occurred in early July, with health authorities noting the cause was established after the patient died. A second worker succumbed to the infection in August. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) Epidemiological Bulletin, four individuals fell ill between July 4 and 6, 2026. City health authorities confirmed a total of six occupational cases, while the remaining four patients received treatment and are now recovering well.

Peter Tinnemann, head of the Frankfurt health authority, addressed public safety concerns following the incident. The mosquito is probably already dead, Tinnemann stated, adding that there is no likelihood of person-to-person spread and that the risk to the Frankfurt population is negligible. In response to the outbreak, Fraport set up mosquito traps. Captured mosquitoes are currently being examined in a laboratory.

Rare Vector-Borne Transmission and Diagnostic Hurdles

The occurrence aligns with the clinical phenomenon known as airport malaria, defined by the RKI as a very rare event where an infectious mosquito is imported on an aircraft or in luggage. Infection then takes place on the plane, at the airport or in its immediate vicinity. Documented precedents remain scarce; the institute noted the last such case was documented in 2023, also at Frankfurt Airport.

Frankfurt health authority physician Regina Ellwanger Berry pointed out that airport malaria occurred so infrequently that physicians did not include it in standard differential diagnoses for patients lacking any history of travel. Based on RKI guidelines, clinicians examining individuals employed at or close to airports handling intercontinental passenger and freight flights should factor in airport malaria as a potential diagnosis during the summer months when evaluating unexplained fevers in patients without travel backgrounds.
