October 31, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

An 89-year-old woman in Simpelveld thwarted an attempted scam by fake police officers, leading to the arrests of two women aged 20 and 23 from Landgraaf.

Fake Police Detective Targets Resident in Simpelveld

The victim received a telephone call on a Friday from an individual posing as a police detective, according to the article. The caller claimed an active investigation was underway and announced that officers would soon visit the residence to appraise and insure valuable belongings. Recognizing potential danger, the 89-year-old resident chose not to handle the situation alone and asked her neighbor for assistance.

reported that the incident unfolded at a home on the Houbiersstraat in Simpelveld. When the neighbor answered the incoming call, the caller refused to speak with anyone other than the primary resident. Despite ongoing suspicions from both women, the telephone conversation dragged on for nearly two hours while the fraudsters maintained pressure on the elderly homeowner.

Arrests on Houbiersstraat and Follow-Up Raids in Landgraaf

True to their word during the prolonged phone call, two individuals eventually arrived at the Houbiersstraat property to collect the valuables. However, the real police had already been alerted and arrived at the scene concurrently. Officers immediately apprehended one of the suspects at the location. The second suspect fled the area in a vehicle but was tracked down and arrested shortly afterward.

noted that both detained suspects are young women from Landgraaf, aged 20 and 23. Following the arrests, law enforcement executed additional searches at residences on the Abdissenlaan and the Dominicus Werdenstraat in Landgraaf. Investigators established that one of the arrested women was likely linked to a remarkably similar scam that occurred three days prior. Authorities are currently reviewing regional records to determine whether the pair is connected to other cases of fraud.

Broader Enforcement Against Phone Fraud

This intervention follows a documented surge in fraudulent activities involving individuals impersonating law enforcement officers. Municipal authorities and local investigators continue to urge residents to remain vigilant against unexpected callers demanding access to valuable possessions or financial accounts.
