Two Arkansas Men Charged With Attempted Murder After Fargo Beating
Two Arkansas men face attempted murder charges after a severe beating outside a Fargo, North Dakota apartment building left a victim hospitalized with life-threatening injuries for more than a week, Valley News Live reported.
Attempted Murder and Gang Charges Filed in Cass County
Gerardo Gonzalez and Angel Luis Escobedo Ocampo, both residents of De Queen, Arkansas, stand accused of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and a criminal street gang offense. Court records filed in Cass County District Court detail the charges stemming from the August incident. Both men were arraigned on Oct. 7 and remain in custody.
Fargo police responded to the assault at approximately 4:39 a.m. on Aug. 11. Officers discovered the victim face down in a large pool of blood suffering from severe facial trauma. Medical evaluations revealed a nasal fracture, multiple facial fractures, a brain bleed, and swelling so extreme that medical personnel had to surgically open the victim’s eyes. The man required intubation and spent over a week hospitalized, with doctors initially fearing he might lose vision in one eye.
Evidence and Surveillance Footage Link Suspects to Attack
A 911 caller and other witnesses reported seeing two men kicking and stomping the victim in the head, chest, and body for several minutes before fleeing the scene. Investigators utilized surveillance footage from the area, blood-stained clothing, and a sandal matching one worn by the victim to identify Gonzalez and Escobedo Ocampo. The two suspects worked together and shared a room at a nearby motel, where law enforcement later recovered items matching those captured on the surveillance video.
Charging documents also note that investigators found evidence indicating the victim had attempted to arrange drug transactions in the hours preceding the assault. Toxicology results showed the victim tested positive for amphetamines.
Upcoming Court Dates in Cass County District Court
The legal proceedings for Gonzalez and Escobedo Ocampo are advancing through the North Dakota court system. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 27, followed by a felony dispositional conference set for Dec. 23. Court officials emphasize that charges are accusations and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
