The TV Petterweil handball team faces a challenging match Saturday evening against HSG Groß-Bieberau/Modau, a team known for its prolific scoring despite defensive vulnerabilities. The game, scheduled for 7 p.m. At the Sporthalle Im Wesner, comes after a recent 30:23 victory for Petterweil against TV Groß-Umstadt – a win that coach Martin Peschke hopes signals a positive shift after a four-game losing streak.
While HSG Groß-Bieberau/Modau currently holds the second-place position in the league standings, they have conceded more goals than all but three other teams. This defensive weakness is something TV Petterweil intends to exploit, according to Peschke. “The coverage is the weak point. We have to get up to speed well, get them to retreat and keep them busy so that a few top performers lose their touches,” he stated.
The upcoming match is not expected to impact the top spot in the league, currently held by ESG Gensungen/Felsberg, who have established a seven-point lead after defeating Groß-Bieberau/Modau, Petterweil, and Offenbach-Bürgel in recent weeks. Gensungen/Felsberg’s strong performance has made their claim to the Hessen championship increasingly secure.
HSG Groß-Bieberau/Modau boasts the league’s highest scoring offense, averaging 34.4 goals per game. Key players contributing to this offensive power include right winger Kevin Kunzendorf, leading the team with 153 goals (46 total), and left back Damjan Jajic, who arrived from the KC Veszprem Academy in Hungary in 2024 and has scored 104 goals. Despite this offensive strength, the team’s defensive record, anchored by veteran goalkeeper Martin Juzbasic, remains a concern.
TV Petterweil has historically performed well against HSG Groß-Bieberau/Modau, winning 29:26 in Groß-Bieberau and drawing 31:31 at home last season. More recently, they secured a decisive 37:31 victory in the first leg of the current season. The team has too recently bolstered its roster with the addition of pivot Leon David (from TV Gelnhausen), left winger Moritz Klenk (from TV Großwallstadt), and defense specialist Matic Grusovnik (from TSG Münster) in preparation for the remainder of the season.
The Falken HSG Bieberau/Modau are coming off of wins against Bruchköbel and Pohlheim, and are looking to finish February with a win against Petterweil. The team acknowledged the difficulty of the match, noting Petterweil’s consistent performance and strong defensive play. “Petterweil will demand a lot from us and we have to play with high efficiency,” said coach Thomas Weber. “Above all, we must not be unsettled by their robust defense, but appear with a lot of tempo and commitment.”
