Turkish bear goes viral after eating too much fruit

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

A Turkish bear named Okan has become ⁣an internet sensation after becoming ill from overindulging in fruit at the Karagöl Wildlife rescue and Rehabilitation Center. The bear underwent a CT scan and blood tests after exhibiting discomfort, but veterinarians resolute he was or else healthy ‌and has ‌as recovered.

Okan’s recent fruity feast‌ isn’t ‍an isolated incident; he⁤ required similar⁤ treatment‌ three years ago for the same issue. It⁢ was during that prior visit to the hospital that a staff member, unfamiliar with ⁢the bear’s name, jokingly gave ⁢him⁤ his own ⁢- ‌Okan – which stuck.⁤ The story highlights the ⁤growing connection⁣ between humans and wildlife, and the challenges of managing animal diets in rehabilitation centers.

“He underwent⁢ a CT scan to check for⁣ any masses. However, the CT scan results came back clean, and his blood count was also checked, and there were no problems. He’s fine now; he’s very ⁢tame and happy, ‍and he’ll be ‌in the pool to cool off soon,” said center‌ director Şemsettin Memişoğlu.

Visitors to the wildlife park have‌ been delighted to see okan ‌back to his playful self, recognizing him from the widespread news coverage. Center⁢ staff are now carefully monitoring Okan’s diet, adjusting his intake of seasonal fruits⁤ and vegetables, along with bonito fish and‌ honey during the winter months.

“Three years ago, when our new employee went to the hospital and didn’t know our bear’s name,he ⁤quickly⁢ said,’I gave him my⁣ own name, his name is Okan,’ and our bear’s name was registered as Okan,” Memişoğlu told CNN Turk.Veterinarians ⁢and biologists are working to ensure⁢ Okan doesn’t experience similar digestive⁢ issues in the ‍future. The center’s focus remains on providing appropriate nutrition for all its animal residents.
