horner Explores Options Following red Bull Settlement
Christian Horner is now evaluating potential future opportunities in Formula One following the resolution of his internal inquiry at Red Bull Racing. While his ample settlement does not provide the financial independence to launch a team outright – valuations for McLaren stand at £3.5bn and Alpine at $1.5bn (£1.1bn) as of 2024 estimates – a buy-in to an existing outfit appears the most probable course.
Alpine presents itself as a particularly attractive option. The team, currently owned by Renault, has consistently underperformed relative to its resources and personnel, a situation Horner successfully addressed during his tenure at Red Bull. Horner’s close relationship with Alpine’s executive advisor, Flavio Briatore, further strengthens this possibility. When questioned prior to Horner’s settlement, Briatore stated, “Christian is not in Formula One in this moment anymore.I hope he comes back soon but, for the moment, he’s not in the picture of Alpine.” Though, with Horner now available, and Renault no longer manufacturing their own engines, the team’s ownership appears open to future changes.
Haas also represents a potential, though less promising, buy-in chance, lacking the potential for significant advancement seen at Alpine.
A return to a team principal role has also been considered. Ferrari was previously linked to Horner, with chairman John Elkann reportedly admiring his capabilities, but the team has as renewed its contract with current team principal Fred Vasseur. Aston Martin, backed by owner Lawrence Stroll, has also been mentioned as a possible destination, but the team’s ambition to sign Max Verstappen presents a significant obstacle. Given the strained relationship between the Verstappen family, particularly Jos Verstappen, and Horner, his appointment could jeopardize Aston Martin’s pursuit of the four-time world champion.
Looking ahead, Horner may adopt a strategic approach, awaiting the impact of major regulation changes scheduled for the 2026 season, including new engine regulations. These changes could create instability within teams, potentially leading to opportunities for a highly sought-after figure like Horner. Despite the turbulent circumstances surrounding his departure from Red Bull, his expertise remains highly valued within the sport.
