Tuchel Explains Alexander-Arnold England Omission | Right-Back Decision
England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his decision to omit Trent Alexander-Arnold from his squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, effectively casting doubt on the Real Madrid right-back’s participation in this summer’s World Cup finals. The omission, announced Friday, has sparked debate given Alexander-Arnold’s recent form with his club.
Tuchel acknowledged Alexander-Arnold’s talent, stating, “I know exceptionally well what Trent can offer us. I played many times against him and suffered when he played against my teams with Liverpool. So I know very well about his strength and what he can give.” However, he emphasized that the current selection process is focused on evaluating players who have consistently performed for the national team.
“At the moment it is like we have evidence how great we were in September, October, November, and the players who are in camp for right full-back, they have to push for their ticket, they have to compete, they have to show again that they deserve this,” Tuchel explained. He specifically cited Jarell Quansah, Tino Livramento, and Djed Spence as players who currently align more closely with his tactical vision for the right-back position.
The decision comes after Alexander-Arnold completed a high-profile move from Liverpool to Real Madrid last summer, a transfer that was intended to revitalize his career. Despite the change of scenery, he has seen limited playing time under Tuchel, appearing for just 26 minutes under the manager’s tenure, with his only appearance coming in a 1-0 win over Andorra last June.
When questioned about whether he had spoken directly with Alexander-Arnold regarding his exclusion, Tuchel responded curtly, “Not yet.” He also declined to speculate on whether the 27-year-old believes his international career may be nearing its conclude, simply stating, “I don’t know.”
Alexander-Arnold, who has earned 34 caps for England and participated in the previous two World Cups, now faces an uphill battle to convince Tuchel of his worthiness for a place in the final squad, which will be named at the end of May. The upcoming friendlies represent the last opportunity for players to impress the manager before the final selection is made.
The omission follows reports of a recent split between Alexander-Arnold and his girlfriend, Estelle Behnke, adding another layer of complexity to the situation. However, Tuchel’s focus remains firmly on the sporting considerations, prioritizing players he believes best fit his tactical approach.
Tuchel’s squad announcement included 35 players, suggesting a broad evaluation process ahead of the tournament. Despite the expanded roster, Alexander-Arnold was not deemed to be among those currently in contention for a starting role. The England manager has yet to indicate whether a significant shift in Alexander-Arnold’s form or circumstances could alter his assessment in the coming weeks.
