Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa pushed back Sunday against the suggestion that his turnovers tend to happen in clusters, following a 33-8 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts marked by three giveaways – two interceptions and a lost fumble. The performance reignited scrutiny of Tagovailoa’s turnover history, a recurring concern throughout his NFL career.
Tagovailoa’s struggles with ball security are statistically notable. As entering the league in 2020, he has recorded at least three turnovers in seven games, a figure surpassed only by Trevor Lawrence over the same period, according to ESPN Research.This pattern prompted a question about whether Tagovailoa feels he presses when facing adversity,leading to multiple mistakes.
“I wouldn’t say I’m pressing,” Tagovailoa stated in his postgame press conference. “I would say it’s part of the game. You obviously don’t want to turn the ball over. I thought that was a wild comment, that I turn the ball over in bunches. That’s crazy. It just so happened that’s what happened today, it was what it was.Got to move forward from that, can’t make those same mistakes.”
Prior to Sunday’s game, tagovailoa had only committed multiple turnovers in three games during the 2022 season. While acknowledging the need to eliminate repeated errors, Tagovailoa and the Dolphins face the challenge of improving ball security as they navigate a competitive AFC playoff race.
