Trump’s State of the Union Rebutted: Padilla Accuses President of Lies & Division

February 25, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

WASHINGTON — Following President Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) delivered a sharp rebuke, accusing the president of falsehoods and employing tactics reminiscent of “corrupt dictators.” Padilla’s response, delivered in Spanish, centered on the economic anxieties felt by many Americans and the aggressive immigration enforcement policies pursued by the Trump administration.

“We just heard Donald Trump do what he does best: lie,” Padilla stated, directly challenging Trump’s portrayal of a thriving nation. His remarks came as Democrats attempt to regain momentum ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, where control of Congress is at stake.

Padilla painted a contrasting picture of the United States, highlighting rising costs of living – rent, food, and utilities – and the impact of Republican tax cuts favoring billionaires. He specifically condemned the actions of federal agents, alleging they were “terrorizing our communities by targeting people because of the color of their skin or for speaking Spanish — including immigrants with legal status and citizens.” This criticism echoes concerns raised about Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) tactics, including reports of excessive force and warrantless entries into homes, as reported by The Hill.

The Senator’s critique extended to Trump’s claims of foreign policy successes, such as the ousting of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and a slowing of inflation. Padilla sought to rally support for Democratic candidates, who have struggled to effectively counter Trump’s dominance in national political discourse.

Padilla’s personal experience underscored his criticism. He recounted an incident last year where federal agents tackled and handcuffed him while he attempted to question Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem at a news conference in Los Angeles. “I am still here standing. Still fighting,” Padilla declared, urging others to resist what he characterized as Trump’s authoritarian tendencies.

The Democratic response was delivered in two parts. While Padilla addressed the nation in Spanish, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger offered the English-language rebuttal from Colonial Williamsburg. Spanberger questioned Trump’s motives, suggesting he prioritizes personal gain over the interests of the American people, and accused him of deflecting attention from allegations of self-enrichment and his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Padilla similarly referenced Puerto Rican pop star Bad Bunny, who faced criticism from Trump for performing in Spanish during the Super Bowl halftime show. “As Bad Bunny reminded us a few weeks ago: ‘Together, we are America,’” Padilla said, emphasizing the importance of unity and inclusivity.

The Senator’s strong condemnation of Trump’s immigration policies comes amid increasing scrutiny of ICE’s operations. Padilla highlighted instances of agents allegedly using excessive force, including shooting at vehicles with families inside, creating what he described as a “nightmare that divides and destroys our communities.” Padilla’s office released a statement detailing his concerns and outlining a vision for a more equitable path forward.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, the contrasting narratives presented by Trump and Padilla underscore the deep political divisions within the United States. The outcome of these elections will likely determine the future direction of the country and the extent to which Trump’s policies will continue to shape the nation’s landscape.
