Trump Unveils Reflecting Pool Renovation Before Midterm Elections
President Donald Trump unveiled the completed $14m renovation of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool, delivering a lengthy speech that included construction details just hours before midterm elections, according to reports.
Trump Discusses Reflecting Pool Construction and Delays
Standing before the water feature on Monday afternoon, Trump discussed changes to the pool’s pipe, granite, and surrounding grass during an address that lasted nearly an hour. The project had faced months of delays and a prominent algae bloom that turned the water green after an initial unveiling in June. Trump used the press conference to display printouts of construction joints and assert that granite has a million-year lifespan, The Independent reported.
The speech marked what was expected to be the president’s final public address ahead of the November 3 congressional elections. Multiple television networks, including Fox News, cut away from the remarks as the president continued discussing Washington building projects, according to The Independent.
Conflicting Claims Over Pool Damage
Trump used the event to repeat unsubstantiated claims that vandals caused the algae growth and damage that delayed the pool’s reopening. His administration failed to produce evidence to support those allegations. Former Olympic canoeist David Hearn had been charged in connection with the site, but U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro dropped the case on July 31 after court disclosures attributed the damage to a contractor’s botched installation, CNBC reported.
Attorneys for Hearn stated that the dismissal did not erase the abuse of government power in arresting a patriotic American, according to The Guardian. During his Monday remarks, Trump criticized past renovations overseen by former presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, alleging overspending.
Trump Warns of Extreme Democratic Candidates Before Midterms
Roughly 20 minutes into his remarks, Trump pivoted to the upcoming midterm elections, describing them as the most important in a lifetime. He told reporters that the Democratic Party had nominated extreme candidates and warned that the sitting president’s party typically loses ground during midterms. “We gave this a very strong shot,” he said, according to CNBC.
Polls heading into Election Day showed Democratic candidates narrowly ahead in competitive Senate races across states including Texas, Alaska, Kansas, Iowa, and Maine. Reports noted that challengers stood to benefit from widespread voter discontent regarding the cost of living, high energy prices, and inflation resulting from the war with Iran that Trump initiated in February.
Trump Outlines New Municipal Proposals for Washington
Beyond the reflecting pool, Trump outlined several other municipal proposals for the nation’s capital. He discussed plans to erect a triumphal arch, establish a promenade along the Potomac River, build a National Garden of American Heroes featuring 250 to 500 statues, and renovate a local public golf course currently facing legal hurdles.
Trump Promises Payments If Republicans Win Elections
During the address, Trump repeated a controversial claim that if Republicans win, “everybody is going to get $5,000.” He also lashed out at specific Democratic candidates, including Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, while referencing an economic figure regarding the wealth of the top 1% that he had previously touted at a Kansas rally.
As millions of Americans prepared to cast ballots on November 3 to determine control of the House and Senate, the closing campaign event focused heavily on infrastructure rather than the economic anxieties driving voters to the polls.
