Trump Tariffs and Iran Conflict Hit US Manufacturers Ahead of Elections

Trump Tariffs and Iran Conflict Hit US Manufacturers Ahead of Elections

October 11, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Aluminum tariffs implemented by Donald Trump have cost Doug Rende’s Ohio manufacturing company between 4.5 million and 5 million dollars this year alone, driving mounting political frustration among business owners ahead of the November 3 legislative elections. Trade disputes and concurrent geopolitical conflicts are squeezing supply chains across the American industrial heartland.

Shapes Unlimited, based in Ohio, manufactures aluminum doors, grilles, and railings. The business relies heavily on imported aluminum because domestic supply is insufficient. Tariffs on these imports climbed from 10% to 25% and reached 50% since last year. Transportation expenses compounded those pressures following the outbreak of the war in Iran in late February, adding 6,500 dollars per container for incoming materials, according to Rende.

Aranceles y Costos Industriales en Ohio

The White House broadened trade measures against multiple countries and products, including steel, aluminum, and the automotive sector, after Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025. While certain domestic producers gained protection against foreign competition, manufacturers relying on imported inputs faced severe cost increases and ongoing uncertainty. Sam Miller, another industrial manufacturer in Ohio producing kitchen and bathroom fixtures, described a difficult operating environment complicated by tariffs on Asian imports and stalled expansion plans in Canada. Miller noted that while the Supreme Court previously struck down a large portion of initial tariff surcharges, new levies created fresh financial hurdles and complicated cross-border distribution plans.

Trade friction between Washington and Ottawa created operational obstacles for regional exporters. Miller intended to open a distribution center across the Canadian border this year, but those plans faced persistent delays. Guy Coviello, president of the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber in Ohio, stated that the impact is negative for the roughly 3,000 businesses his organization represents, with some firms losing clients or cutting back operations. Coviello explained that supply chains face complex hurdles when materials cross the northern border multiple times in both directions. At the same time, the war in Iran triggered fuel price spikes that increased shipping expenses for industrial inputs.

Impacto Político Ante las Elecciones Legislativas de Noviembre

The convergence of higher tariffs, cross-border trade friction, and transportation inflation is shaping voter sentiment ahead of the congressional elections on November 3. Rende expressed frustration over government policy and a perceived lack of checks and balances from Congress regarding executive power. Miller concurred that economic pressures will likely push voters away from Republican candidates, while the Democratic opposition aims to use industrial discontent. Coviello noted that local chambers support targeted tariffs for critical defense and health sectors, but warned against broad levies on commodities where domestic smelting capacity remains absent.
