Trump Speaks at Davos, Highlights Greenland Talks; Carney Warns of Global Order Fracture

January 28, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

U.S. President donald Trump is scheduled to speak on Wednesday at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Before his departure, he stated, “We have a lot of meetings scheduled on Greenland,” revealing his continued interest in acquiring the autonomous territory, which currently belongs to Denmark.

Trump’s comments reiterate previous expressions of interest in purchasing Greenland,an idea that was publicly floated in August 2019. At that time, he reportedly asked advisors about the possibility of a purchase, sparking widespread discussion and ultimately being rebuffed by both Danish and Greenlandic officials. BBC News reported extensively on the initial discussions.

The Greenlandic government has consistently stated it is not for sale. Greenland’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen affirmed this position in 2019, calling trump’s suggestion “absurd.” Reuters covered Frederiksen’s response.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in davos brings together global leaders from business, politics, academia, and civil society to discuss pressing global issues. The forum’s agenda this year focuses on topics such as climate change, economic inequality, and technological disruption. The World Economic Forum’s official website provides details on the event and it’s agenda.

It remains to be seen what specific proposals or discussions Trump will bring to the table regarding greenland. However, his continued focus on the territory suggests it will be a topic of conversation during his time at the forum. The U.S. has strategic interests in the Arctic region, including potential access to natural resources and increased geopolitical influence, which may be driving Trump’s interest. The Council on Foreign Relations offers in-depth analysis of U.S.interests in the Arctic.
