President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social following a private meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Wednesday, stating that the alliance “wasn’t there when we needed them, and they won’t be there if we need them again.”

The meeting at the White House lasted over two hours, though the specific duration of the president’s direct conversation with Rutte was not disclosed. Secretary General Rutte later described the discussions as “highly frank” and “very open” in an interview with CNN, acknowledging clear disagreements between the two leaders.

Disputes Over Iran and Operation Epic Fury

The tension centers on President Trump’s belief that NATO member countries failed to support the United States during the Iran war. Specifically, the president has expressed deep misgivings regarding the alliance’s role before and during Operation Epic Fury.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reinforced this position on Wednesday, quoting the president in stating that NATO was “tested and they failed.” Leavitt added that member nations had “turned their backs on the American people,” who provide the funding for those nations’ own defense systems.

Further friction arose from calls by the U.S. Administration to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to mitigate rising global oil prices, a move that several NATO countries resisted.
