Trump on Iran: Exit Strategy or Escalation?

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

President Donald Trump indicated Sunday he is considering a “wind down” of military operations in Iran, even as attacks continue to target Israel and Gulf states, a shift in tone that comes after weeks of escalating tensions following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on February 28th.

The President’s comments, delivered via social media, stopped short of agreeing to a ceasefire, a demand repeatedly issued by Qatar as mediator between the warring nations. “We are looking at a possible wind down, but only if Iran behaves,” Trump stated, adding that a full cessation of hostilities remains off the table. This position contrasts with earlier statements where he threatened severe consequences for further Iranian aggression.

The shift appears to be influenced by an Israeli leader determined to complete diplomatic negotiations, according to a report in The New York Times. The initial strikes against Iran, authorized by both the U.S. And Israel, targeted missile infrastructure, military sites, and leadership figures in Tehran and across the country. The death of Khamenei, who had led Iran since 1989, triggered a wave of retaliatory attacks from Iran, directed at Israel and U.S. Allied states in the Gulf.

Since Khamenei’s death, several other high-ranking Iranian officials have been killed in subsequent strikes, including top security official Ali Larijani, intelligence minister Esmail Khatib, and the head of the paramilitary Basij force, Gholamreza Soleimani. Israel has confirmed its responsibility for these attacks. Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader’s son, was appointed as his successor on March 8th.

The U.S. And Israel have also targeted key sites linked to Iran’s nuclear program, as well as Iranian oil and gas infrastructure, including Kharg Island, a major oil terminal, and the South Pars natural gas field. These strikes have significantly impacted Iran’s economic lifeline, but have not yet halted its retaliatory actions.

The conflict has rapidly escalated, spreading to Lebanon, with mounting casualties and damage on all sides. The U.S. Is reportedly preparing to send additional troops to the Gulf region, though the exact number and deployment locations remain undisclosed. Trump’s consideration of a “wind down” comes despite continued attacks on Israel, and as his administration faces mounting pressure to de-escalate the situation.

As of Sunday, the White House has not responded to requests for clarification regarding the scope or timeline of a potential reduction in military operations. The State Department has remained silent on the matter, deferring all questions to the President’s social media posts. The ceasefire brokered in June 2025, which expired February 28th, 2026, is no longer in effect.
