US and Ukrainian negotiators Meet as Trump Proposes Framework for Ending War in Ukraine
KYIV, Ukraine – US and Ukrainian negotiators are engaged in discussions aimed at finding a path to end the ongoing war, as former President Donald Trump has unveiled a plan he says could bring a swift resolution. The meetings come amid continued russian attacks on Ukrainian cities, including a recent barrage on Kyiv that killed at least three and wounded dozens more, and Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure.
Trump has tasked advisors, including Tom Witkoff and potentially Jared Kushner, with traveling to Moscow this week to discuss the framework with russian President Vladimir Putin. The plan, initially described by Trump as a “concept” or “map” to be “fine-tuned,” reportedly includes limitations on the size of Ukraine’s military, a bar on NATO membership for Ukraine, and a requirement for Ukraine to hold elections within 100 days. While negotiators indicate the framework has evolved, specific alterations remain unclear.
“In the coming days it is feasible to flesh out the steps to determine how to bring the war to a dignified end,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on X, stating his delegation would “swiftly and substantively work out the steps needed to end the war.” He further noted in a Saturday address that the American side was “demonstrating a constructive approach.”
The diplomatic efforts are unfolding against a backdrop of escalating attacks. On Saturday and overnight into Sunday, Russian drone and missile strikes in and around Kyiv resulted in at least four deaths and 38 injuries, including four children wounded when a drone struck an apartment building in Vyshhorod.Zelenskyy reported Sunday that Russia launched 122 strike drones and ballistic missiles against Ukraine, adding that Russians have used nearly 1,400 strike drones, 1,100 guided aerial bombs and 66 missiles against Ukraine this week alone. He reiterated the need for strengthened air defenses and continued partner support.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan has urged Ukraine to halt attacks on the Black Sea terminal near Novorossiysk, owned by the Caspian Pipeline Consortium, after Ukraine claimed responsibility for damaging the facility. The CPC pipeline is crucial for Kazakhstan’s oil exports, and the Kazakh Foreign Ministry stated the attack harmed bilateral relations and requested preventative measures from Ukraine.
