The launch of Trump TV directly follows an escalation of tensions between the executive branch and several news organizations. On September 18, Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that CNN, MS NOW, and Politico would be stripped of their press credentials, accusing the outlets of publishing false information over multiple years. By the following day, reporters from the banned organizations were turned away at the gates of the White House complex, and their press passes were deactivated.
According to El Heraldo de México, the White House defended the restrictions by asserting that entry to the presidential estate is a privilege rather than a constitutional right, maintaining that the move does not constitute an attack on freedom of the press. In response, CNN, MS NOW, and Politico filed a joint federal lawsuit on September 21. The legal filing alleges violations of the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech and the press, alongside due process violations under the Fifth Amendment. The plaintiff organizations also requested a temporary restraining order to restore press access while the litigation moves through the court system.
Television Pool Boycott Disrupts Daily Coverage
The fallout extended rapidly beyond the primary targets of the ban. ABC, CBS, Fox News, and NBC—the major networks participating alongside CNN in the cooperative White House television pool system—voted to suspend their reporting activities within the pool after CNN was blocked from executing an assigned shift. The shared broadcast system allows a single designated organization to cover presidential movements and distribute the resulting footage to all participating outlets, minimizing physical congestion in restricted areas.
The suspension left several presidential events on Monday without the standard shared television coverage.
