Trump-Iran Talks: Kushner’s Role, Failed Negotiations & Shifting Blame

March 25, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Former President Donald Trump revealed he received a “very big gift” from Iran, a disclosure that coincided with conflicting reports regarding potential back-channel negotiations between Washington and Tehran. The gift, described by Trump as consisting of “two things,” was delivered through intermediaries, though the specifics of the items remain undisclosed.

Trump’s comments, made during a rally in Ohio, came after reports surfaced suggesting his son-in-law and former senior advisor, Jared Kushner, had been quietly involved in discussions with Iranian officials in the waning days of the Trump administration. Yet, these efforts appear to have stalled, with Iranian officials reportedly expressing dissatisfaction with Kushner’s approach.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Iran felt Kushner was acting unilaterally and lacked a clear mandate from the U.S. Government. The talks reportedly faltered over disagreements regarding sanctions relief and the terms of a potential agreement. The Iranian government has since publicly downplayed any ongoing negotiations with the United States.

“Mr. Trump himself was negotiating with himself, and he considered his own statements as an agreement,” stated Iranian military official Brigadier General Abolfazl Shekarchi, according to the United News Network. This statement appears to be a pointed critique of Trump’s negotiating style and a rejection of any claims of progress made during his presidency.

The timing of Trump’s revelation about the gift is particularly noteworthy, given the current geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing efforts to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). The Biden administration has expressed a willingness to re-enter the JCPOA, but negotiations have been stalled for months.

The conflicting signals from both Washington and Tehran raise questions about the prospects for a diplomatic breakthrough. While Trump’s comments suggest a potential channel for communication, Iran’s denial of ongoing negotiations and criticism of Kushner’s past efforts cast doubt on the possibility of a quick resolution. The situation remains fluid, with both sides seemingly engaged in a delicate dance of diplomacy and brinkmanship.

The Iranian government has not yet publicly commented on the nature of the “gift” presented to Trump, and the former president has offered no further details. The lack of transparency surrounding this exchange adds to the uncertainty surrounding the future of U.S.-Iran relations.
