Trump Honors Hockey Team & Awards Medal of Freedom at State of the Union
During his State of the Union address on Wednesday, President Donald Trump announced that Team USA hockey goaltender Connor Hellebuyck will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor. The recognition comes after Hellebuyck’s performance in recent international competitions, specifically a key save during the Olympics that Trump described as “Olympics-saving.”
Hellebuyck, currently the starting goalie for the Winnipeg Jets, was lauded by Trump for his contributions to American hockey. The President’s announcement was met with a standing ovation in the House chamber, according to reports. The award acknowledges Hellebuyck’s pivotal role in securing victories for Team USA.
The announcement occurred amidst a planned recognition of the 2024 U.S. Olympic hockey team. However, not all members of the team were present. Dallas Stars goalie Jake Oettinger opted to return to Dallas ahead of a Wednesday game, foregoing the White House visit, team officials confirmed.
The event also drew attention for a separate incident involving Karoline Leavitt, a White House aide, whose photograph with Team USA hockey players whereas wearing a MAGA hat sparked online controversy. The image circulated widely on social media, drawing criticism from some observers.
The Presidential Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, or to world peace, or to cultural or other significant national endeavors.” The White House has not yet announced a date for the formal presentation of the award to Hellebuyck.
